چکیده

The aim of this paper is to study the interactions between categorization and decision making. While these two fields have mostly evolved separately, we introduce a model for categorization processes that is derived from a general decision-making heuristics. Such a model is able to account for both tasks involved in categorization, i.e. classification and category construction. One of the most important principle that support this work is the bounded rationality as introduced by Simon [Simon, 1955] in order to take into account the human limitations. We designed a connectionist network, called Categ ART, to implement our categorization model. We illustrate our method for an experiment where subjects had to categorize saving schemes. Categ ART produces automatically polynomials that can be interpreted as classification rules based on prototypes. The analysis of these rules allows us to suggest two anchoring and adjustment heuristics that seem to play an important role in our experiment. 1 Categorization theories While decision making and categorization theories have evolved mostly separately in cognitive psychology, we propose to build a bridge between these two fields and claim that it may benefit both. In general, categorization involves two main kind of processes: 1. a category construction process, where categories are constructed, using semantic and/or episodic knowledge and/or experiences, in order to represent and structure some sets of stimuli; 2. a categorical judgment process, sometimes referred as a classification process, which determines the appropriate category for a particular stimulus. Early research in categorization was dominated by the so-called classical view, whereby subjects were supposed to use formal and logical rules that gave a strict definition of the category [Bruner et al., 1956]. The study of more ill-defined categories dramatically revealed the limitations of this approach. The studies conducted by Rosch and her colleagues on natural categories suggested that categorization does not consist of hypothesis testing but rather learning and processing of relevant information [Rosch, 1973]. In particular, Rosch defended the idea

The anchoring-and-adjustment heuristic: why the adjustments are insufficient.

One way to make judgments under uncertainty is to anchor on information that comes to mind and adjust until a plausible estimate is reached. This anchoring-and-adjustment heuristic is assumed to underlie many intuitive judgments, and insufficient adjustment is commonly invoked to explain judgmental biases. However, despite extensive research on anchoring effects, evidence for adjustment-based a...

The Dynamics of Anchoring in Bidirectional Associative Memory Networks

We formalize the biased activation theory of anchoring using a bidirectional associative memory network. Anchors determine the starting state of this network. As the network settles, we show that the nodes representing numerical responses activate and deactivate consecutively, generating sequential adjustment. By demonstrating that anchoring as adjustment emerges naturally from the dynamics of ...

Dynamic Voltage Scaling with Asynchronous Period Adjustment for Embedded Controllers

Due to inherent energy constraints, batterypowered embedded controllers must operate in energy-efficient fashion while guaranteeing required Quality of Control (QoC). Although Dynamic Voltage Scaling (DVS) is promising in energy saving, pure DVS schemes don’t take into account the actual resource requirements of the target applications. To reduce energy consumption of embedded controllers execu...

Putting adjustment back in the anchoring and adjustment heuristic: differential processing of self-generated and experimenter-provided anchors.

People's estimates of uncertain quantities are commonly influenced by irrelevant values. These anchoring effects were originally explained as insufficient adjustment away from an initial anchor value. The existing literature provides little support for the postulated process of adjustment, however, and a consensus that none takes place seems to be emerging. We argue that this conclusion is prem...

Anchoring and adjustment during social inferences.

Simulation theories of social cognition suggest that people use their own mental states to understand those of others-particularly similar others. However, perceivers cannot rely solely on self-knowledge to understand another person; they must also correct for differences between the self and others. Here we investigated serial adjustment as a mechanism for correction from self-knowledge anchor...
